WHO announced an end to the Covid pandemic health emergency

Covid-19 no longer a health emergency

The Covid pandemic is not a global public health emergency at present. This, the World Health Organization announced on Friday. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said that for more than one year, the pandemic was on a downside trend. This came with the population’s immunity, which increased due to vaccination. And the infection and mortality rate is decreasing, and the pressure on the health systems is easing. This he said at a news conference in Geneva.

Tedros further said that this trend allowed countries to return to life. This is as they knew it before Covid. Thus, with immense hope, he declared that COVID-19 is over as a world health emergency.

About seven million people died from the covid in the world. This is from when the World Health Organization 1st declared the emergency in January 2020. This is according to the United Nations organization’s official data. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the true death toll is about twenty million.

The World Health Organization’s decision came as the U.S.A. is to bring to an end its national public health emergency. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said there is still a risk that a new variant may emerge. This may cause another surge. And he cautioned the national governments against easing out the health systems they built to fight the coronavirus. He said that the coronavirus is here to stay.

However, the World Health Organization chief said the time approached for countries to transform from an emergency response to tackling Covid like any other infectious disease.

Covid was 1st observed in Wuhan, in the country of China. This was in December, in the year 2019. It was when many patients started to experience pneumonia-like symptoms but with unknown causes.

The Covid pandemic moved fast throughout the world. It was in early 2020. This led to the shutdown of international travel and border closures. This was as countries tried hard to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Covid hit hard the elderly and other vulnerable people. It ravaged the hospitals that did not have the hospital bed capacity or even supplies to manage the sudden patient surge.

Many of the national governments had shut down public life in an attempt to stop the death. This led to an economic downslide and social disruption. The long-term consequences of this will remain for years to come.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the Covid pandemic is much more than a health crisis. It caused economic upheaval, and it erased trillions of GDP. It also disrupted travel and trade and shattered businesses. This resulted in plunging millions into poverty.

He also said that it caused major social upheaval with the borders closed. The movements were restricted, and the schools were shut. Also, millions of people experience isolation, loneliness, and anxiety.

About 3 years later, the origins of the covid virus are still a mystery. Scientists, government officials, and the general people still debate about Covid. The U.S.A. intelligence community is still divided in its assessment of the origin of the covid.
