Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said that for more than one year, the pandemic was on a downside trend. This came with the population’s immunity, which increased due to vaccination. And the infection and mortality rate is decreasing, and the pressure on the health systems is easing. This he said at a news conference in Geneva.
Tedros further said that this trend allowed countries to return to life. This is as they knew it before Covid. Thus, with immense hope, he declared that COVID-19 is over as a world health emergency.
About seven million people died from the covid in the world. This is from when the World Health Organization 1st declared the emergency in January 2020. This is according to the United Nations organization’s official data. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the true death toll is about twenty million.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said there is still a risk that a new variant may emerge. This may cause another surge. And he cautioned the national governments against easing out the health systems they built to fight the coronavirus. He said that the coronavirus is here to stay.
However, the World Health Organization chief said the time approached for countries to transform from an emergency response to tackling Covid like any other infectious disease.
