You can earn Discover’s 5% Bonus categories for Q3 2024 on up to $1,500 spent in the first quarter. However, remember to activate the category, or you’ll only get 1% cash back on all purchases.

You can earn 5% cash back in Discover’s Q2 bonus categories (gas stations, EV charging stations, home improvement stores, and public transit) until June 30.

  • You can earn the bonus rate on purchases at Walmart stores and online, including Walmart Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets, curbside pickup, Walmart+, and Walmart gas stations. How Does the Discover 5% Cash Back Category Work?

To earn cashback from Discover’s 5% Bonus Categories for Q3 2024, you need a Discover it Cash Back, Discover it Student Cash Back, Discover it Balance Transfer, or Discover More card. You can activate Discover’s 5% Bonus Categories for Q3 2024 through your online account, the Discover mobile app, by phone, or via an email link. Once activated, you’ll earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 spent in the bonus categories, then 1% after that.

Purchases must be made with U.S. merchants to qualify for Discover’s 5% Bonus Categories for Q3 2024. Eligible Walmart spending includes in-store and online purchases, Walmart gas stations, and using Walmart Pay with your Discover card. However, purchases at Target, wholesale clubs, convenience stores, discount stores, and non-Walmart sellers within Walmart do not qualify for Discover’s 5% Bonus Categories for Q3 2024.

How to Redeem Your Cash Back with Discover

You can redeem your Discover rewards for cash back, which can be sent to your bank account or applied to your credit card bill. You can also use rewards for PayPal payments, Amazon purchases, eligible gift cards, and donations to participating charities. There is no minimum redemption amount, and your rewards never expire.

Discover’s Bonus Categories for Q3 2024 are attractive, but other cards offer similar benefits. For example, the Chase Freedom Flex also offers 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in quarterly categories, plus 5% on travel through Chase Ultimate Rewards and 3% on dining and drugstores. Neither Discover nor Chase Freedom Flex charges an annual fee. However, if you’re willing to pay an annual fee, like the $95 for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, you can get even better rewards and perks, such as a 25% boost in point value for travel redemptions through Chase.

What other 5% Cashback Categories Does Discover Offer?

Discover’s Bonus Categories for Q3 2024 are not done for this year. Discover has yet to announce the final portion of its 2024 calendar. In Q1, the bonus categories were restaurants and drugstores, and in Q2, they were gas stations, electric vehicle charging stations, home improvement stores, and public transit. In 2023, the categories were:

  • Q1: Grocery stores, drug stores, and select streaming services
  • Q2: Restaurants and wholesale clubs
  • Q3: Gas stations and digital wallets
  • Q4: Amazon.com and Target

Cardholders can earn up to $300 in bonus rewards annually. While Discover’s 1% base rewards rate is low, the rotating categories make the card appealing to those who utilize it.
